Organicity: what is it and how does it apply to therapy?

Organicity is one of the most important principles underlying my therapeutic approach.

So, what is it??

The term organicity refers to the internal wisdom inherent in all living systems (source: Sensorimotor Psychotherapy).

Essentially, organicity tells us that each one of us carries within the inner wisdom and intelligence to heal, adapt, and evolve.

It invites us to recognize the adaptive intelligence of life - and reminds us that we, as humans, are not separate from nature (just perhaps a bit disconnected from Her and thus, ourselves). Just like a sunflower knows to tilt her blooms towards the sun, we too have an inner intelligence that knows how to respond to life in an adaptive way.

When we are on a healing path, yes, external insights, books, teachers, coaches, podcasts, etc can serve as wonderful inspiration and support. However, in my experience, true healing and transformation always happens from within. It is an inner insight, an inner knowing, an inner experiential shift. It doesn’t come from the outside. That is organicity at work. An internal wisdom, a “tilting towards the sun.”

Potential clients are sometimes disappointed or confused when I share that, no, as their therapist I will not have the answer to their problems. In fact, it doesn’t really matter what my (or anyone’s!) personal opinion is - what matters is your own inner experience and knowing. And that is what I can offer (through the approach of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and other somatic practices): tools to assist you in connecting with your own inner wisdom.

When we are able to quiet our minds, and mindfully track our emotions and sensations in the present moment, we are building the skills to reconnect with and experience organicity - our own inner wisdom and inherent capacity for healing.
